Home Maintenance Tasks Homeowners Should Do More Often

Property maintenance is very important but a burdensome job at the same time. If you’re not properly maintaining your home, the damage caused overtime will start getting messy and sometimes irreversible. Dirty ducts and vents, faulty HVAC systems, clogged drains etc. hinting at major structural problems. In addition there are others that cause seriously expensive damages on the long-term. Here we have compiled a short list of home maintenance tasks that every home owner should be looking out to more often.

1. Cleaning your gutters
Cleaning out your gutters is a regular job to be done throughout the year. This will prevent debris from accumulating, which if ignored will cause leaks and rotting. Carefully remove the debris then thoroughly wash and clean the spot, fill in holes and cracks and repair the loose areas. Home owners should plan this chore every spring and fall or hire a professional.

2. Checking in on your HVAC system
It is highly recommended that an HVAC professional be hired for bi-annual maintenance work of your HVAC system. Homeowners with pets should frequently wash and change filters every month. If you notice water dripping off your AC unit then most probably it means the drain pipe is clogged. Try cleaning up the drain pipe on the outside. This can also effect the cooling of the air conditioners. If the issue still remains, do not panic and call in a professional to restore your HVAC to normal functioning.

3. Regularly flushing out clogs
Water clogging in the kitchen and bathrooms is a common problem and you should address small clogs promptly to avoid them becoming a bigger problem. This is caused by hair build up in the shower or grease build up in the kitchen. By keeping your plumbing systems running smoothly you can avoid leaks and water damage. You should address small clogs as soon as they pop up.
Also, check underneath your sinks and inside cabinets to see if there are any water spots, to identify any hidden leaks that need timely attention. Kitchen garbage disposal should always be done properly as fibrous veggies, tea and coffee grounds can build up in plumbing pipes in addition to grease and fats overtime resulting in clogged drains.

4. Air Filters, Vents, & Ducts
Dirty air filters are a reason for many issues around the house. If there are a number of people living in the house, if you have pets or anyone has allergies then you should frequently replace air filters. Dirty air filters can actually inflate your energy bill and also can be the reason for allergies or breathing problems.
Secondly vents and ducts of your HVAC system should also be kept in check. Vents and ducts are easily and commonly ignored area of home maintenance. You can keep your vents clear using your vacuum cleaner every few months. However, cleaning your ducts is probably a job you’ll need to hire a professional. Professional cleaning of your ducts is highly recommended at least once a year.

5) Pressure Wash
You can give outside of your house a facelift by cleaning up the sidings, fence and driveway with a pressure washer. Pressure washers generate amazing results. As time passes we get used to the dull look of the floor and sidings and usually fail to notice how the color has faded over time. Pressure wash your fence, siding, driveway, patio, or deck and watch the transformation. The results are amazing.
